Spectacular Narrow Gauge Railway Tour

Due to the demise temporarily(we hope!) of all ng steam locos we have reluctantly had to cancel this tour.                                                 Spectacular Narrow Gauge Railway Tour

Itinerary

Day 1


Arrive in Kiev.

If time, we will visit a narrow gauge line belonging to a brick plant at Bershad.

Overnight at Kozatsky Hotel on Main Square in Kiev (dinner not included).


Day 2


Breakfast in hotel.

Bus transfer Kiev ­ Smolin (100 kms, 2 hours).

Visit to 'new' peat narrow gauge line, using Tu6A, plus 1 passenger coach.

Return to Kiev, where we join our 'Dzherelo' train at Kiev Passenger.

Welcome dinner on the train.

Overnight transfer to Antonovka.

Day 3 

Breakfast on train.

Steam locomotive GR-336 Antonovka ­ Zarechnoe with runpasts, false starts.

Diesel haulage Zarechnoe to end of line and return, time permitting.

Rejoin our train and dinner.

Overnight transfer across the Carpathian Mountains to Beregovo.

Day 4

Breakfast on train.

Here we have steam locomotive GR-286 all day, with runpasts.

Beregovo ­ Khmelnik ­ Irshava ­ Khmelnik ­ Vinogradovo.

It is likely we will steam haul the local service train, stopping all stations Khmelnik ­ Vinogradovo.

Dinner on the train.

Overnight transfer Vinogradovo ­ Vigoda ­ the last working forestry line in Ukraine.

Day 5

Breakfast on train.

Visit to loco shed at Vigoda before we travel Vigoda ­ Medunoc (20 kms) with steam loco K-159.

From here we will enter the forest on lightly laid track with diesel Tu-4, the last working example of its type in Ukraine.

A 5 km line has been laid to a new working area and we will traverse this to the end.

Runpasts with both locos.

Return to our train with diesel and steam.

Dinner on the train.

Overnight transfer Vigoda ­ Lvov.

Day 6

Breakfast on train.

Here we visit two 'new' peat lines.

Bus transfer to Stoyanov for narrow gauge transfer to peat fields (15 kms) at Rtzishev.

Runpasts. Return to our bus for transfer to Lopatin, where we visit the 12 km line to the peat fields.

Runpasts. Diesel haulage in both instances.

Return by bus to our train at Lvov.

Dinner on train.

Overnight transfer to Dubno.

Day 7

Breakfast on train.

Bus transfer Dubno ­ Smiga.

On this long narrow gauge line we have diesels hauling 100 tonne trains of peat in hopper wagons.

We will be attached to one of these trains with an open car for transfer to peat fields and return.

Runpasts. A particularly scenic line with sand cuttings.

Quick visit to peat factory, then return to our train.

Dinner on the train.

Overnight transfer to Rudnitsa.



Day 8

Breakfast on train.

Transfer along the long line (approx 75 kms) to Rudnitsa, with steam locomotive GR-280.

Runpasts. Depot visit.

Here is a Zil rail-mounted narrow gauge car ­ we will try to get this started for a few runpasts!

Afternoon we travel Gaivoron ­ Tautzyna using both broad and narrow gauge steam side by side for part of the route, with runpasts.

Broad gauge steam engine type to be announced.

On one dual rail section we may be able to pose one in front of the other.

Return to our train for farewell dinner.

Overnight transfer to Kiev.

Day 9

Breakfast on train.

Bus transfer from train to Borispol Airport.

End of tour.

We may include a short city tour by bus for those not departing before midday.

Price given is Kiev ­ Kiev fully inclusive, except for drinks in the Bar Car/Music Saloon.

Tea, coffee and mineral water are free at all times.

Single persons willing to share with another person of the same sex do not pay the single supplement.

Please note:

. On all days that we are away from our 'Dzherelo' train for lunch, a packed lunch with fruit juice will be supplied. Tea and coffee is also available in limited quantities from Thermos flasks.

. The peat fields in Ukraine are not peat bogs as we know them. In Ukraine it is a dry form of peat which is 'harvested' by huge machines, sometimes over hundreds of acres/hectares.
The long lines between fields and factories are usually very scenic.
These visit were very popular in 2003.

Entertainment is provided every night of the tour in the Music Saloon.
